Mission

Novelty Intervention Kenya is an independent Kenyan non-profit that works to build individual and community resilience to disasters through innovative community-focused and community-managed disaster risk reduction initiatives.

Disaster Reduction Goal

Our vision is a disaster-resilient Kenyan society: a nation of resilient communities and individuals in which natural and human-induced hazards do not negatively impact lives, livelihoods and development and where development processes do not lead to accumulation of disaster risks from natural and human-induced hazards.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Our DRR Programming include:
- Disaster Risk Education
- Technology & Innovation for DRR

Membership in Key Networks

Member, Global Network for Civil Society Organizations in DRR (GNDR)

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

We are engaging in Advocacy initiatives, especially at the local level. The newly set County Governments in Kenya need to prioritize disaster risk reduction, enact supporting laws and policies and establish institutions to spearhead disaster risk reduction at the grassroots.
We are engaging with Members of County Assemblies as well as County Governments to promote this agenda.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

We conduct participatory disaster risk assessment every time we make entry into a given community, as a first step to our programming. This ensures an understanding of the local risk context. We also conduct periodic risk assessments to understand the changing risk trends.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

This is among the focus areas of our programming. Any development process begins with awareness and sensitization. In Nairobi, we are engaged in aggressive community awareness and sensitization on the importance of a proactive approach in dealing with disasters and disaster risk.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

We are engaging with other stakeholders in other sectors including Environment, Health, Governance, etc, to develop initiatives that address the underlying risk factors

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

We are currently designing training programs to help build the capacities of individuals and institutions at the local level to respond to disasters effectively and in a timely fashion.

Making Cities Resilient Campaign Activities

SCHOOL-BASED DISASTER RISK EDUCATION AND AWARENESS IN NAIROBI CITY:
Novelty Intervention Kenya conducts risk awareness and education programs in primary schools in Nairobi. We aim to mold schools as centers of safety and champions of safety and resilience in their local/neighboring communities.
This is fundamentally in line with Essential 7 (as well as other Essentials) of the Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient - Ensuring education programmes and training on disaster risk reduction are in place in schools and local communities.
