Reducing disaster damage to critical infrastructure - Deadline 27 October!

[...]

Every year thousands of houses, schools, hospitals, and roads are destroyed or damaged by disasters including tsunamis which are the deadliest and costliest disaster events.

A report from the World Bank confirms that the net benefit of investing in more resilient infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries would be $4.2 trillion with $4 in benefit for each $1 invested.

How can we ensure that critical infrastructure is built to survive cyclones, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes and other extreme events?

World Tsunami Awareness Day

In 2019, the World Tsunami Awareness Day on November 5, is promoting target (d) of the Sendai Framework, which seeks to reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services.

Over 700 million people live in low-lying coastal areas and small island developing states exposed to extreme sea-level events including tsunamis.

Investing in resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and education is critical to saving people and protecting their assets against tsunami risk in the future.

The campaign is an opportunity for governments, the private sector, science and technology partners, academia, community groups, and civil society organizations to show how risk-informed investments in critical infrastructure can build more resilience and save more lives against disasters in the future.

How the competition works

Send a 2-to-3 minute video report showing what communities, groups and organisations are doing to build more resilience in critical infrastructure and make the world safer from disasters.

Films will be shortlisted by our judging team and the top ideas will be uploaded to YouTube and promoted through our web site and social media.  The public will decide the best three videos, each of which will be awarded a prize.

The films will be used to help spread the message of Risk Informed Investments in Critical Infrastructure.
