Hungary: How much money is there for flood protection? / Mennyi pénzünk van az árvíz ellen?

Source(s): Index.hu Zrt, Central European Media & Publishing

Hungary has been mending its old flood protection system without a long term disaster risk reduction strategy, according to Index.hu. Developing an effective flood protection system would cost up to HUF 350 billion (USD 1,559 Million), but the country could save up to HUF1000 biliion  (USD 4,454 Million) within 50 years.

However, experts say that it is easier to find resources for flood protection from the budget when there is trouble. The problem with this kind of thinking however is that the condition of the defence systems are deteriorating while extreme floods have been increasing in frequency. The price of defences is increasingly expensive, and the costs weigh down on the Hungarian budget at unpredictable periods, which makes it harder to plan ahead.
