Haiti quake lesson: The Caribbean must boost disaster readiness

'Scientists and experts from different countries and European Union and UN representatives called for measures bolster the mitigation of natural disasters in the Caribbean, especially in places like Haiti, still reeling from the powerful quake of 2010,' reports Dominican Today...

At the opening ceremony of the meeting 'Experiences and Challenges to Reduce Seismic Risk in the Caribbean' experts emphasized the seismic risk in the region and talked about the human component of the problem. The importance of building codes, early warning systems, research, preparedness, capacity building and resilience were some of the topics discussed at the meeting.
