Discussions have been going on regarding emergency response and disaster prevention plans over potential future disasters in Thailand, following coastal residents' panic in the wake of the 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia on April 11. "We are worried. Many of us have raised the issue of safety measures and early warning systems," South Tourism Federation secretary general Kannikar Eawsakun said to The Nation.

Bangkok Council president Suttichai Weerakulsunthorn admitted that regulations regarding earthquake and fire may need to be reviewed, but Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, however, urged the public not to be overly concerned. "Quakes happen in Japan frequently. Things may sway but people can live normal lives," he said.
