UN’s atomic agency adopts nuclear safety plan despite row

Source(s):  Business Day, BDFM Publishers (Pty) Ltd.

The United Nations atomic agency’s 35-country board adopted a plan yesterday to strengthen global nuclear safety after Japan’s Fukushima accident six months ago, despite criticism from several states that the proposals had been watered down, as per Business Day.

Among the steps, states would undertake national assessments of how nuclear plants were designed to withstand "extreme 'natural' hazards". Other steps included measures to strengthen emergency preparedness.
