Indonesia: Makassar city celebrates international day for disaster reduction

The Makassar Community Alliance for Disaster Response – SIAGA (Getting Ready!) - will hold a campaign to celebrate the International day for disaster reduction on 13 October  2010.

The Alliance was launched on 8 October 2010 at a meeting in Makassar Red Cross (PMI) branch office. The Alliance is comprised of local community organizations (KPRM), a national network of organizations (Uplink Indonesia), PMI, youth environmental organization, nature conservation, student and PMI volunteer organization. A campaign is a follow up Shanggai DRR forum, and UNISDR alert. SIAGA Action is also supported by the mayor of Makassar who will attend the event at Losari Beach Pavilion.

Action alert will distribute leaflets containing the 10 point essentials as part of the Making Cities Resilient "My city is getting ready" world disaster reduction campaign, in 10 strategic locations of the city of Makassar. This activity will be paralleled with a talk show on radio and local TV, with speakers from PMI, experts form the city government, SIAGA activist, and environmental experts from university.

The focus of the campaign this year is to create an awareness of emergency response for urban people and policy makers. in addition, SIAGA will collect solidarity and donations for victims of floods and landslides in Wasior West Papua, still in the recovery phase.,

Activities planned include: socialization guide disaster response training for school/students, planting 1000 trees, community services by 1000 hoe to clean ditches and canals, which is facilitated by PMI. While KPRM and Uplink Indonesia is currently preparing CDRF programmes, and cooperative city government formulate an alternative concept of integrated village settlement.
