The Research Associate will undertake scientific research, policy analysis and stakeholder engagement on DRR and related issues in Asia under the Climate Change, Disasters and Development (CCDD) cluster at SEI Asia in Bangkok, Thailand.

You will have a demonstrated interest in exploring the relationship between development and risk – in theory and practice. This includes understanding the underlying drivers of risk such as poverty and inequality, unsustainable natural resource use, and unplanned urbanization – themes that are central to the work of the International Centre of Excellence on Transforming Development and Disaster Risk (ICoE-TDDR), which SEI hosts. You will also work to integrate gender equality and rights-based approaches across aspects of DRR, including risk assessments, disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

The CCDD cluster supports decision-makers and at-risk communities to act on climate change, enhance disaster resilience, and work toward sustainable development. The organization collaborates with research institutions, governments, civil society organizations, businesses, and communities in Asia to produce credible and relevant knowledge for decision-making across all levels. The aim is to engage in relevant policy processes, build the capacities of key stakeholders, and facilitate the empowerment of marginalized groups, to enable meaningful and inclusive responses to climate change and disasters, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework for DRR. The CCDD cluster works closely with other SEI Asia clusters and SEI Centres to deliver impactful projects and activities in line with SEI’s mission to provide knowledge that bridges science, policy and practice.

The Research Associate will report to the assigned Line Manager and respective project leaders/managers that they will work for, and under the overall supervision of the Centre Director.
