Global climate risk index 2009: weather-related loss events and their impacts on countries in 2007 and in a long-term comparison
This document analyses to what extent countries have been affected by the impacts of weatherrelated loss events (storms, floods, heatwaves etc.), based on the assessments of the Munich Re database NatCatSERVICE®. It addresses disaster risk reduction as a key challenge for effective adaptation, and international insurance mechanism as an important complement within a comprehensive adaptation regime.
The index looks forward to the UNFCCC negotiations on a Copenhagen climate change agreement to play a key role in strengthening countries’ abilities to manage climate-related risks.
