Africa - Supporting Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods Using Satellite Applications

Organizer(s) UK Space Agency
Date

The UK Space Agency's International Partnership Programme (IPP) will be delivering a series of regional webinars, aimed at promoting our projects' capabilities and outcomes/impacts across climate change, agriculture, humanitarian, maritime, and disaster resilience.

Time

10:00 - 11:30 BST

Projects involved:

Regional and National Rice Production Forecasting in Peru (Remote Sensing Applications Consultants) -

This project aims to generate agrarian statistics on rice production required by government more efficiently – with improved accuracy and timeliness – enabling better management of supply at the national level and reduced crop price volatility.

ACCORD (Advanced Coffee Crop Optimisation for Rural Development) (Earth-i)

ACCORD uses satellite technology and weather data in an innovative way to provide tailored information to smallholder farmers in Kenya and Rwanda on their coffee crops. The farmers could thus make more timely and informed crop management decisions that would increase their income.

SIBELIUs (eOsphere)

SIBELIUs provides improved pasture monitoring capabilities in Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan to support their large and economically significant herding communities, who are increasingly being impacted by climate change.

MAPCAM (Monitoring Agricultural Production for Climate Adaptations in Mongolia) (Remote Sensing Applications Consultants)

MAPCAM will provide satellite-derived information on crop distribution and growth to help stakeholders in Mongolia’s agricultural sector to plan for increased production and resilience to climate change.

PRISE (Pest Risk Information Service) (CABI)

PRISE aims to increase food security by reducing crop losses from pest outbreaks. This service will enable farmers to manage outbreaks more effectively using Integrated Pest Management methods.

Crop Yield Decision Support (Assimila Ltd)

This project will provide information on maize yields in Ghana, such as current yields to help plan harvesting, transport and processing, future yields to inform markets and enhance long term food security and past yields to help farmers benchmark and improve productivity.
