Resilience, a structure’s ability to withstand and recover from disaster, is a critical issue in today’s world. Building residents, building owners, lenders, and institutional investors alike are vulnerable to the negative impact of natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. During this session, participants will learn the vulnerabilities of homes and buildings to wildfire, relevant building codes and referenced standard test methods and recent research on the vulnerability of buildings, particularly to wind-blown embers.
Learning Objectives
- Understand and describe the three basic exposure that buildings threatened by wildfire must resist;
- Be able to describe the meaning of a "coupled approach" as related to building survival during wildfires;
- Understand the available basic building code options and relevant standard test methods available in the United States.
Speaker: Dr Stephen Quarles, University of California Cooperative Extension Advisor Emeritus
