‘No support’ from agri dept as fall armyworm destroys maize fields

The lethal fall armyworms that arrived in Bangladesh in 2018 after ravaging the cornfields of the Sub-Saharan Africa, have laid waste to cornfields in Chuadanga district and are spreading fast compared to last year, causing worry to farmers.

Rafiquzzaman [Sufi Rafiquzzaman, additional deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension in the district] explained that the pest could not do much damage last year due to cold weather but the fall armyworm has attacked the cornfields this season ahead of time.

According to Food and Agricultural Organisation, fall armyworm (FAW), an insect that is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, prefers maize, but can feed on more than 80 additional species of crops, including rice, sorghum, millet, sugarcane, vegetable crops and cotton.

He claimed that the intensity of this pest attack is several times higher than last year. The pest is spreading to other cornfields every day as the pesticides of renowned companies are not working, [Afsar Ali, a farmer at Kulchara village in Chuadanga sadar upazila] added.
