The Gambia Observed the IDDR 2019

Today October 13th, The Gambia joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction - IDDR 2019 with the theme focusing on Target D of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030. 

The day was graced with a match pass with school children, Civil Societies, NGOs, United Nations Bodies and other Government Departments with the National Police Band. 

The Government has made the commitment to the implementation of the Sendai Framework and has also urged the citizenry to change their attitudes on how we design the infrastructure for a sustainable infrastructure (Build to Last). The Government has also complimented partners for their support to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) for a more resilient nation. 

Looking at the vulnerability status of the Gambia, the Representative of the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms. Wanja KAARIA, WFP Country Director, has expressed the need for investment in DRR in the country for building the capacities of the vulnerable communities. She has also mentioned on the continued partnership with the Government of the Gambia and their support in the implementation of the Sendai Framework. On the theme, she recommended the use of sustainable designs to have a good infrastructure in other to reduce the impact of disasters on critical infrastructure that has a huge impact on the economy. 

The Deputy Executive Director of the NDMA, said the office wants to maintain it records with the UNDRR on the implementation of the Sendai Framework. He mentioned on the challenges the office is facing particularly on data collection and other capacity buildings. He also urged partner institutions in the government to ensure we have good infrastructure for a safe and resilient nation.
