Aware of being part of the international community with high disaster vulnerability, disaster mitigation will be carried out sustainably by various parties in the geopark region. Visitors will be taken to the theme 'Living in Harmony with Geohazard' to commemorate International Day for Disaster Reduction in 2019, as well as the initial follow-up to the declaration of all participants of the 6th APGN Symposium, Rinjani-Lombok Geopark and Rinjani Lombok Biosphere Reserve, in collaboration with Development Planning Agency of West Nusa Tenggara province; Energy and Mineral Resources of West Nusa Tenggara Province; Environmental and Forestry of West Nusa Tenggara; the Indonesian Geologist Association of West Nusa Tenggara; Governmental Village and Samalas Geotourism Working Group of Tanak Beak Village.

Several high schools will carry out a series of activities as follow:

  • Geopark to School (9th October 2019)
This activity is an interactive discussion about geopark, disaster and zero waste.  This activity will be held at 3 high schools and target 50 students from various background/ organisation in each school.

  • Geopark to School and mini excursion to the geosite (10th October 2019)
Similar to previous activity, this geopark to school is also an interactive discussion with student in high school close to the geosite. The discussion will talk about geopark, zero waste and disaster and the mitigation. After discussion at the school 50 students will be taken to the geo site and learn about the geo hazard.

  • Green Camping at Tanak Beak Village (12 - 13 October 2019)
Tanak Beak Village is a developed geotourism village in Rinjani-Lombok Geopark, the hope is that this village will grow as geotourism village as well as disaster resilient village. This camping will conduct some activities such as traditional children’s game, talk show about geopark, disaster and mitigation, zero waste, waste management, follow by clean and tree planting action. About 100 people (student and communities) will participate this event, some of them come from the Batukliang Utara District and other area within Rinjani-Lombok Geopark.

Living in an area with active tectonics does not always have implications for disasters, along with the magnitude of the potential for disasters there is also the potential for abundant natural resources and fertile land that are the source of community life. The thing the community needs to do is learn to co-exist in harmony with the potential of existing disasters and disseminate information related to disaster potential and mitigation to the broadest possible community. Hopefully the initiation of small steps as a result of cooperation between various parties will have a big impact in the future.
