The First World Conference on Meteotsunamis

Organizer(s) University of Wisconsin-Madison
Venue
Hotel Park, Hatzeov perivoj 3, 21000
Date
-

Research on meteotsunamis - atmospherically generated long-ocean waves in a tsunami frequency band - has proliferated during the last few decades, following strong events observed at numerous coasts of the world oceans, marginal seas and the Great Lakes. The aim of the conference is to share contemporary meteotsunami-related activities (from socio-economic impacts to research and construction of warning systems) and to set up a common platform for promoting future meteotsunami studies.

The conference will comprise a broad range of meteotsunami topics, sorted in several sessions:

  1. Meteotsunami overview talks
  2. Meteotsunami observations
  3. Atmosphere-ocean modelling for meteotsunamis
  4. Atmosphere-ocean interactions and ocean processes
  5. Climatology of meteotsunamis
  6. Meteotsunami forecasting and developing early warning system

The conference will close with a round table, during which participants will discuss all aspects of meteotsunami research and meteotsunami-related future activities. This will include (i) discussing standards for meteotsunami observations and modelling (ii) discussing ways for creation of efficient early-warning systems (iii) creating a framework (informal/formal network) for future collaborations (iv) making meteotsunami research more visible in the tsunami community and among the public.

Please note that regular oral presentations last for 20 minutes, including 15 minutes of talking time and 5 minutes for questions. For those hosting poster presentations, please keep the poster size to less than 95 cm in width and 150 cm in height. Also, there will be 2 minute presentations of posters, so please prepare 2 ppt/pdf slides with the most important information. For those who did pre-booking during registration, there will be a full-day excursion on the last day of the conference (11 May 2019) to the National Park Krka and the city of Šibenik, lunch included. For those wishing to go to the excursion but still didn’t book, it might be possible to reserve a spot on-site during the first two days of the conference (price: 60 Euros).

We plan to have a special issue in a high-quality, peer-review journal, where a collection of papers, including those coming out of the conference presentations, will be published. The chosen journal will be announced at the conference.
