Spain: Environmental Hydraulics Institute (IHCantabria) observes the International Day for Disaster Reduction

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 13 October as an annual observance day to raise awareness of how people are acting to reduce their risk to disasters and to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.

The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the University of Cantabria in Spain held a seminar to celebrate International Day on Disaster Reduction 2018 (IDDR). During the event, Ignacio Aguirre Ayerbe and María Merino presented the IDDR proceedings to the researchers and students of the institution. They also presented the progress made so far in the study they are conducting on multi-hazard early warning systems in Europe and Asia, which is being developed under the frame of the CABARET project (Capacity Building in Asia for Resilience EducaTion).

CABARET is a European ERASMUS+ programme project to foster regional cooperation between Europe and Asia, aiming to increase disaster resilience among coastal communities through a more effective multi-hazard early warning. It is composed of a consortium made up of 15 European and Asian higher education institution from Bulgaria, Indonesia, Latvia, the Maldives, Malta, Myanmar, the Philippines, Spain, Sri Lanka, and it is led by the Global Disaster Resilience Centre of the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom.
