Celebration of IDDR 2018 - Bangladesh

International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), held every 13 October, celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters. IDDR encourages every individual, community and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.

The United Nations has called this day a method to promote a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction. In Bangladesh, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief commemorated the day at the national level by bringing together all DRR actors, UN agencies, different alliance consortiums and local NGOs working for disaster risk reduction.

This year, the German Red Cross is leading a consortium of three agencies, including Chrsitian Aid and Action contre la Faim (ACF), on the Dhaka Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness (DEEP) project, supported by European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations. The project's main objective is to reduce the propensity and scale of secondary impacts from earthquakes and major emergencies among the population of Dhaka. The project actually suggests a multi-pronged approach to risk reduction and the building of decentralized, volunteer-based emergency resources. Since this year’s slogan of the International Day for Disaster Reduction is "Increase Investment in Disaster Reduction, Reduce the Economic Loss," Bangladesh has adopted a similar theme: “To increase disaster preparedness for reducing damage of assets to commemorate the day."

The DEEP project, contributing towards the effectiveness of response coordination and the enhancement of knowledge on earthquake preparedness among local institutions, community associations, and schools, also commemorated IDDR 2018 by supporting the production of leaflets, banners, and posters depicting messages related to earthquake preparedness, and also contributed towards the communication materials used at the national level. The DEEP project is also holding a roundtable discussion on preparedness, resilience, and reducing the damages to economic assets. The roundtable will feature high level officials from the Ministry of Disaster & Relief, country’s academicians, DRR practioners, and others key members of different alliances working on the theme and consortium staff.
