Four winning youth videos focus on reducing the human cost of disasters

Source(s): tve

Four short videos which tackle the human cost of disasters and present innovative ideas on how to reduce the economic harm they cause, have been selected as prize winners in tve’s online video competition, in the run up to the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction on 13th October.

The competition, which runs in partnership with UNISDR, received 50 video entries, submitted from around the world by young people in two age groups, 14-18 and 19-30. Eight entries have been shortlisted by tve’s judging panel and cover a range of innovative ideas and initiatives from protecting against coastal erosion in Benin to modular emergency homes in Mexico. Now the viewing public has the opportunity to help select two further prize winners from the shortlist.

The competition aims to highlight how communities around the world are finding ways to reduce the damage caused by disasters and to reduce the clean up bill – money which could be better spent on schools, hospitals, housing and other key areas of infrastructure. There are many examples: building resilient homes and schools, establishing natural barriers to protect against storms, planting trees on hillsides to prevent mudslides, growing resilient crops, developing technology to give advanced warning, and planning for better recovery from disasters.

The videos are now online, and with one view counting as one vote, the public can share their favourites and help select two further prize winners from the shortlist.

About tvebiomovies
The Reducing the human cost of disasters video competition is one strand in tve’s 2018 youth video competition activities. The competition is organised to mark the International Day for Disaster Reduction, on 13 October with support from UNISDR and is part of tvebiomovies 2018. Reducing economic losses is the third target of the global plan to reduce disaster losses by 2030, as set out in the Sendai Framework.

Alongside the Reducing the human cost of disasters category, tvebiomovies 2018 includes three further categories: The Global Youth Video Competition on Climate Change co-organised by the UN Climate Change secretariat and the UNDP-GEF Small Grants Programme and supported by Fondation BNP Paris; Protecting our Pollinators with the Convention on Biological Diversity and the African Tech for Good category. All of the tvebiomovies 2018 activities are also generously supported by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU). Information on the voting and winning selection of entries for all categories is available on the tvebiomovies website: biomovies.tve.org.
