IDDR 2018 in Thailand: Together toward Safe ASEAN: From lesson to improvement

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in Thailand has continuously been organized for 5 years jointly with ASEAN Day on Disaster Management by Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Ministry of Interior, with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Non-Government Organization, Civil Service Organizations and other partners.

This year the event is organized on 18 October 2018, under the theme of “Together toward Safe ASEAN: from lesson to improvement”, at Rama Garden Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. It focuses on lessons learnt by all sectors, both public and private, and how they now collaborate better regarding disaster management, especially to improve, prevent and reduce risks and losses. This is in line with target (c) of the Sendai Framework.

The discussion forum will cover major topics such as the experience of 13 children rescued in cave in Chiang Rai Province and the Laos dam collapse. This will hopefully aid advancement on how to better handle disasters, and reduce loss, as well as to provide better support to ASEAN member countries during disaster. Other activities focus on the role of media during disaster, AADMER work programme implementation and preparedness of communities, and people's response to local disasters with exhibitions from partners.
