International Day for Disaster Reduction 2017 - Niue

2017 will be Niue's first year in celebrating International Day for Disaster Reduction. 

The event will be hosted by the Niue Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and the National Disaster Council (NDC) which consists of several government ministries (Niue Police, National Disaster Management Office, Niue Health, Fire & Rescue, Niue Telecom, Ridge 2 Reef (R2R), Office of the Secretary of Government, External Affairs.  The two offices are being supported by Niue's Youth Council (NYC) and Niue High School Students who will attend the Island Summit in Japan during the month of November.

Objective

The objective of the day is to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.  As the occasion is celebrated annually this will be a first for Niue. The day in Niue will be a time of creating an awareness, educating our community in preparation of reducing their exposures to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks we face. 

Specifically with the 2017 edition continuing as part of the "Sendai Seven" campaign, centered on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework which focuses on the Target B, which aims to reduce the number of people affected by disasters by 2030.
