The Pontbren project: a farmer-led approach to sustainable land management in the uplands
This brochure describes the history and activities of the Pontbren project, a co-ordinated farming and farm woodland research carried out by a group of neighbouring farmers in the uplands of north Wales. The Pontbren experiments support the use of woodland planting to ameliorate flooding, and provide some guidance on how this may best be achieved.
As part of the research project, the farmers have endeavoured to make upland livestock farming more sustainable, in environmental, social and economic terms. This has entailed using farm woodland and hedgerow creation to improve conditions on the agricultural side, the use of wood chips for animal bedding, and the influence of trees into flood management and mitigation.
