Gumare - Shakawe will on October 18 host International Day for Disaster Reduction. The Deputy District Commissioner for the Okavango sub-district, Mr Bakani Mathumo said he was impressed that preparations for the day were on course.

Speaking at a disaster management committee meeting in the village recently, Mr Mathumo urged the conveners for each sub-committee to ensure that their tasks are completed on time.

The day will be commemorated under the theme Women and girls: the invisible force of resilience.

Communication from the National Disaster Management Office says Shakawe was identified to host the commemoration this year as it is one of the areas that are often affected by flooding.

The communication says the commemoration is expected to raise awareness about issues related to disaster risk reduction in the area and nationally. It says the choice of the theme was based on the fact that women and girls have unique knowledge and skills that can be vital in addressing issues of disaster management. BOPA
