Philippines: Science office tests landslide monitoring system
As part of the Landslide Sensors Development Project component of Project Noah, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the University of the Philippines–Diliman Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute, are field-testing a monitoring system in varioius landslide-prone areas in Benguet, Philippines, reports the Sun Star.
The landslide monitoring system is equipped with sensors that measure soil moisture and slope movements, and thus it is able to monitor slopes in a cost effective manner.
"Aside from mitigating the hazards pertaining to weather, the ultimate goal is to have six-hour lead time warning, especially to communities affected by the major river systems," said Nancy Bantog, DOST-Cordillera assistant regional director for Field Operations Services.
