Volunteer opportunity: youth education coordinator

Service opportunity with the California Safe CoRPS (Communities Ready and Prepared through Service)

The California Safe CoRPS (CSC), an AmeriCorps program sponsored by the American Red Cross, provides vital emergency assistance to communities affected by disasters, and increases preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike. This program is funded by an AmeriCorps grant from the California Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism (GO SERV). CSC is the foremost young adult disaster service corps in the state. The following position is 1 of 4 positions available at the Silicon Valley Chapter, American Red Cross with locations in San Jose and Palo Alto California.

Youth education coordinator

- Teach disaster preparedness and health and safety classes to youth
- Organize, coordinate and track special events, including presentations and special projects
- Recruit, manage and mentor incoming youth volunteers to teach and support American Red Cross
programs
- Reach out to community organizations to offer, set up, and deliver disaster preparedness and health and safety classes and workshops
- Work with teenage/youth volunteers on various projects
- Support youth activities and training, including high school Red Cross clubs and Safe Kids activities
- Organize, coordinate, and track preparedness trainings for low-income children and youth
- Promote the Red Cross by staffing health and volunteer fairs
- Receive training as a disaster responder and support disaster response activities
- Reach out to community organizations to engage individuals as Red Cross volunteers
- Receive training to be a First Aid and CPR Instructor
- Teach Health & Safety courses to individuals and local community organizations
- Respond to at least one three-week disaster assignment outside of Santa Clara County
- Receive training as a disaster responder
- Teach Health & Safety and Disaster Preparedness courses to individuals and local community organizations as needed
- Contributes to the work of an emergency relief organization, which may entail periodic extended work hours.

General time allotments

- Community Disaster Education and Direct Community Outreach: 50% of 1728 hours
- Special Project: A 5% of 1728 hours
- Disaster Response: 10% of 1728 hours
- Training: 15% of 1728 hours
- Other administrative responsibilities: 20% of 1728
- Time allotments are approximate and are subject to change

Criteria for position

- Full-time availability (40 hours per week); weekend/evening hours are sometimes required and commit to 10.5 months or 1728 hours of service overall.
- Have excellent written/verbal communication and people skills
- Demonstrate flexibility, professionalism, initiative, and willingness to work in teams
- Have an interest in teaching and training others
- Be proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Have a commitment to service and community involvement as demonstrated by previous volunteer experience
- Be a US citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
- Possess a current and valid driver’s license
- Be available to start September 2012 and work full time (40 hours per week) through July 2013
- High school diploma or equivalent required, College degree preferred
- Bi-Lingual individual highly desirable
