International partnerships: Indispensable tools for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development
Disaster risk reduction is a fundamental element of sustainable development. Hydro-meteorological and geologic hazards threaten food security and human health, cause destruction and loss of life, and sever important business supply chains. No country is immune to disasters; however the vulnerability of communities to disasters is closely related to the level of social and economic development. This event will raise awareness of the fundamental importance of disaster risk reduction and resilience to sustainable social and economic development. Panelists will showcase research, programs, and activities -- often conducted through cooperation with international partners and through international organizations -- in all phases of the disaster management cycle (including prevention, prediction, response, and recovery). This event will emphasize the importance of international partnerships between U.S. stakeholders and other countries and international organizations, such as the World Meteorological Organization, Inter American Institute for Global Change Research and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
