Contributing to the greening of economies and poverty alleviation through the implementation of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS)
Global efforts towards green economies and addressing poverty are particularly sensitive to weather and climate variability and change. Poverty reduction and other development targets are at risk as rural food production and food security, disaster risk reduction, health epidemics, access to water, energy, ecosystem services, etc., in many countries are dominated by weather and climate. Use of scientifically sound climate services can support better climate risk management, and in taking advantage of climate opportunities to increase productivity and promote sustainable development.
However, as highlighted by the report of the High-level Taskforce on the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS ) there is a significant gap between the needs for climate services and their current provision, particularly in least developed and developing countries. Existing climate services are not well focused on user needs across sectors. To bridge these gaps a Global Framework for Climate Services is under development, which will ensure that countries are better equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities arising from climate variability and change and promote green and sustainable development. This side event, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and partner UN agencies will provide concrete examples of benefits realized through the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) in support of improved disaster risk reduction, efficient and green agriculture, improved health, effective water management, energy, etc.
