Disaster resilience part of sustainability, too

"As the world deals with quakes, storms, waves and eruptions, builders realize that surviving and thriving after these threats are key components of sustainability," writes Pacific Standard.

"The end goal isn’t just X client’s building is resilient. The end goal is that we have resilient cities that are up and operational after a seismic event," said Erik Kneer, an associate engineer at Degenkolb. Their company emphasizes the need for buildings that are not only green, but also structurally resilient to natural disasters. Mr Kneer believes that resilient infrastructure is equally important, as earthquakes may cause sewage spills, broken gas lines, etc.
