'Women's role vital in disaster prevention' - Margaret Arnold

In her article for the Korea Times, Margaret Arnold talks about the efforts underway regarding women’s empowerment at a grassroots level to build more resilient communities and initiate long-term social change and development after disasters. She cites some examples, ranging from disaster preparedness efforts in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Nicaragua, to better forest governance in India and Nepal, to coping with drought on the Horn of Africa, where empowering women to exercise leadership within their communities contributed to climate resilience; and presents local and global initiatives that formalise the role of women and grassroots community leaders in resilience building.

Arnold is a senior social development specialist with the World Bank.
