Life after death: Looking at adaptation in mountains after 2005 earthquake in North Pakistan

Source(s): Climate Himalaya

"For the future and protection of coming generations the mountains and people living in them have to be made safer. We have to take some effective approach that would ensure that the devastation of 2005 is not repeated again and the only way is through adapting to risk reduction strategies", writes Noreen Haider for Climate Himalaya.

She describes the lack of safe building codes, and points out that the extensive deforestation was the underlying cause of the landslides and mudslides which followed the 2005 earthquake in the Northern areas of Pakistan. As a result, many rivers were blocked as well.

Although the earthquake generated economic activity in the cities, the journalist finds that locals do not believe "that better preparedness and risk reduction was an option and it could save lives."
