Myanmar: Deforestation causing landslides, says expert
Large-scale deforestation has increased the risk of landslides in mountainous areas, U Kyaw Htun, said at a policy and technical workshop on enhancing capacity for disaster risk reduction held at the Myanmar Engineering Society headquarters in Hlaing township on August 17 as reported by the Myanmar Times. The associate professor and head of the Department of Engineering Geology at Yangon Technological University said landslides needed to be included in national hazard mitigation programs and education about landslide should be introduced, especially in landslide-prone areas.
