Event description

From 2010 to 2019

Since its founding in 2010 with the support of the Ministry of Interior and Safety (MOIS) and Incheon Metropolitan City of the Republic of Korea, a small team at the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction office in Incheon for Northeast Asia (ONEA) and Global Education and Training Institute (GETI) developed the capacity of just over 8,000 professionals from 149 countries1 through training at national and local levels 2011-2019. Trainees have gone on to develop and contribute to national and local strategies for disaster risk reduction, national development and sectoral plans, and to adapt and develop training and courses for communities, officials and university students, among others.

This global reach is a shared achievement – and tells only a part of the story. Efforts have rippled and could not have been possible without the collaboration and prioritization of capacity development for DRR among partners worldwide: national and local authorities, training institutes, academia, advocates and experts from public and private sectors, civil society and the UN, including UNDRR regional offices. Notably, in Korea, national, sub-regional and global reach has expanded through key partnerships with Korean and international academia, cities, district education offices, training institutes, intergovernmental bodies, UN and civil society organizations based in Korea.

2020 and ‘the New Normal’

As the COVID-19 global pandemic began to unfold, ONEA & GETI was able to quickly bring the experience and early lessons from China and the Republic of Korea to a global audience given its role in Northeast Asia and as a training institute. In the face of unprecedented challenges to respond whilst addressing ever-present disaster risk, ONEA & GETI quickly adapted its delivery to bring experts and experience through a series of COVID-19 and DRR webinars to emphasize the necessity to address systemic risk and for resilient recovery. Training courses were also quickly adapted to bring onlinelearning on resilient cities and tools for public health system resilience. Nearly 5,000 professionals participated in webinars and over 1,500 in online training courses since September. Efforts were again delivered together with partners including WHO, PAHO, the UN Office for South-South Cooperation and UNITAR.
