Course overview

Men, women, girls and boys are affected differently by disasters. Women are more likely to be disproportionately affected by disasters because of existing cultural beliefs, traditional practices and socio-economic conditions, leading to increased loss of livelihood, gender-based violence and loss of life. Effective disaster risk reduction (DRR) therefore requires empowerment and inclusive, accessible and nondiscriminatory participation, paying special attention to the needs of those disproportionately affected by disasters such as women and girls.

In this regard, the Gender in DRR training course aims to enhance participants’ knowledge on operationalizing gender equality in DRR programming in line with the commitments made in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. It will also seek to develop skills on gender considerations throughout the entire program management cycle and provide tools and practical understanding on mainstreaming gender in DRR programs.

Course objective

At the end of this five-day course, participants should be able to:

• Explain how a gender lens can be applied to develop a gender-equal disaster risk management approach.

• Identify and describe tools and methods for mainstreaming gender into the project management cycle.

• Identify and describe tools and methods for carrying out gender-equal risk assessments.

• List gender-equal indicators for DRR which can be used to monitor and assess the progress made by various institutions, including governments, NGOs and INGOs

Course modules

In order to achieve the objectives, the course will have the following modules:
