The Regional Conference Understanding Risk (UR) West and Central Africa – “Human Capital and Innovation for a Resilient Society”  will be held from 20 to 22 November 2019 in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). The conference will alternate technical workshops, plenary sessions, feedback and exchange between participants on the crucial challenge of understanding the risks of natural disasters in West and Central Africa. Exhibitions and cultural events will also allow participants to view resilience from a different perspective. Topics will include the use of risk information for urban and financial resilience, digital technologies for a better understanding of flood and erosion risks, nature based solution for risk reduction, risk communication through art, or the participation of local communities and entrepreneurs for a resilient society, and many other exciting topics.

The day of Friday November 22 will be jointly organized with the “State of The Map Africa 2019” Conference, a flagship event in Africa that will bring together 300 innovators in mapping, and will offer the participants the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of latest open and participatory mapping technologies and the OpenStreetMap community.

Understanding Risk (UR) is a community of experts and stakeholders from around the world in the field of risk management and risk prevention – including risk assessment, and communication – including members of government agencies, multilateral organizations, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, academics, local community organizations and civil society.

The members of this community share knowledge and experiences, collaborate and discuss innovations and good practices in the field of risk prevention. Every two years, a world conference is organized; it took place in London, Cape Town, Washington DC and Mexico City. In 2020, the next world conference will be held in Singapore. Between these biennial meetings, regional or national “UR” Conferences are organized to boost local initiatives and build capacity in the area of risk management.

With financial support from the European Union (EU) in the framework of the ACP-EU Africa Disaster Risk Financing Program, managed by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery.
