Global Forum on Innovations for Marginal Environments (GFIME)

Organizer(s) Islamic Development Bank Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates - government International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture
Venue
Al Habtoor Polo Resort
Date

The Global Forum on Innovations for Marginal Environments (GFIME) will serve as a platform to showcase the latest advances in research, innovation, development and policy in agriculture and food production in marginal environments. These are areas of the world most vulnerable to climate change, water scarcity and salinity.

The conference will bring together a select global audience of 250 influential policymakers, decision-makers, scientists and experts who are at the forefront of reshaping agriculture and food production for tomorrow. It will provide a 360-degree overview of opportunities and challenges in agriculture and food production around the world.

Huge economic losses and businesses are at risk. Agricultural production is witnessing the largest measurable decline in quality and quantity of natural resources in history – including everything from arable lands and freshwater resources. Climate change and salinization are not just ideological hypotheses for future generations, they are imminent threats to crops viability and food security impacting an ever-increasing number of countries.

GFIME hopes to foster strategic investment and collaboration between government, scientists, and business leaders in order to tackle global challenges and empower smallholder farmers.

GFIME will cover a very broad range of ideas and subjects. Delegates will have an opportunity to attend sessions focusing on policy, business, technology and science.

To cater to delegates’ specific interests, the forum will be divided into two programs.

Main program

This program will feature sessions on business, policy and technology, including presentations, panel discussions and debates under four themes:

  • Food security: crop diversity and nutrition, gender mainstreaming, agri-finance
  • Climate impact: natural resources management, climate-smart agriculture
  • Sustainability: circularity, clean energy, carbon and chemical footprint reduction
  • Innovation: disruptive technology, investment, ecosystem development, controlled environment agriculture

Scientific program

This program will feature scientific sessions, including presentation of research papers in two parallel streams: Adaptation and Mitigation. Each stream will cover three themes:

Stream A – Mitigation

  •  Management of marginal environments
  •  Sustainable natural resources management
  •  Climate change impacts on agriculture

Stream B – Adaptation

  •  Crop diversification and improvement
  •  Novel biotechnological approaches
  •  Climate-smart agriculture for food security

Workshops

GFIME will also feature workshops running for 2.5-3 hours to offer an in-depth insight into sub-industries critical to food security, climate impact, sustainability and innovation including:

  • Biofuel
  • Feed
  • Aquaculture
  • Water
  • Nutrition
  • Salinity
