Rapid urbanization and climate change are key drivers of increasing vulnerability and disaster risk in Tanzanian cities. In view of this, the government, the World Bank, and the UK Department for International Development (DfID) are collaborating through the Tanzania Urban Resilience Program (TURP) to improve the country’s ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the growing potential of climate-related shock.

From August 29 through 31, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam, the Urban Resilience team will convene for URTZ 2018, a conference to showcase the program’s innovative methods and progress, highlight global best practices in disaster risk management, and transfer the latest technical knowledge to local practitioners.

URTZ 2018 will focus on the understanding of urban risk – showcasing new spatial tools and risk data developed in Tanzania that can empower stakeholders to identify and reduce their risks. As such, URTZ18 is coordinating with partner communities, including the Free and Open Source for Geospatial Conference (FOSS4G) and the Open Cities Africa Summit, to bring together expertise on risk mapping and communication. It will be held in partnership with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery’s (GFDRR) Understanding Risk community – a global community of 7000+ experts and practitioners active in the creation, communication, and use of disaster risk information.

Details on registration will be available soon.
