The objective of the day is to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.  As the occasion is celebrated annually this will be a first for Niue. The day in Niue will be a time of creating an awareness, educating our community in preparation of reducing their exposures to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks we face.

Specifically with the 2017 edition continuing as part of the "Sendai Seven" campaign, centered on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework which focuses on the Target B, which aims to reduce the number of people affected by disasters by 2030.
