The 2017 National Disaster Awareness Week (NDAW) will focus on increasing understanding and preparation for tsunamis. The week launch also coincides with the UNISDR International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13, where the focus for 2017 is to reduce the number of affected people by disaster by 2030.

This is also one of the key focuses of the Fijian Government given its importance towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Tsunami preparedness activities for 2017 will culminate in a National Tsunami Drill.

The key objectives of the National Disaster Awareness Week are:

  • To build and test functional systems for warnings, evacuation, and response
  • To enhance and expand working relationships between key stakeholders
  • To increase Fiji’s preparedness for tsunami events nation-wide.

Disaster awareness week activities are being spearheaded by the Divisional Commissioners in the 4 divisions beginnings on the 13th of October, 2017.
