Disasters hurt more women than men: What’s the solution?
The Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) Knowledge Manager Discussion Forum organises an online discussion on gender and disasters. The issue explored in the event is: What should governments, aid agencies and businesses do differently to protect lives and put women and girls at the core of disaster risk reduction?
The event is organised ahead of this year's International Day for Disaster Reduction, which takes place this week on 13th October. The discussion will take place online between 2pm and 3pm (UK time, GMT+1).
The expert panel includes:
- Nahla Haidar, member of the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
- Maarten van Aalst, director, Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre
- Margareta Wahlström, former head of the U.N. Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)
- Myriam Khoury, vice president for strategic programme development, Mercy Corps (TBC)
- Helen Young, professor at Tufts University and part of the BRACED Sudan consortium (TBC)
