Young people across Georgia engage their schools and communities in celebration of the international week for disaster reduction
Young people from all over Georgia participated in the nationwide contest launched by UNICEF, DRR Center of RDFG and the Ministry of Education and Science in the beginning of the new school year for celebration of the International Week for Disaster Reduction. This year’s focus has been on the needs of persons living with disabilities who have unique contributions, often overlooked, to help reduce the risk of disasters and build resilient societies and communities.
During September-October 2013, students from more than 30 schools from different regions of Georgia implemented series of small-scale innovative projects on disaster risk reduction (DRR) including awareness raising campaigns, flash mobs, intellectual games, performances, tree-planting and environmental clean-up campaigns, etc. reaching in total up to 10,000 community members. The initiative turned out to be a real success, resulting in high-level enthusiasm of students and contribution from school management to support the activities of the newly established youth DRR clubs in their schools.
In order to sum up the results of the contest and to mark jointly the International Week for Disaster Reduction, on October 14-16 the participating schools will be invited in Tbilisi, Akhaltsikhe and Zugdidi for presenting their projects to the larger audience - representatives of local municipalities, education resource centers, civil society and media. During the event, awareness raising materials produced by the schools in the framework of the contest will also be disseminated and the selected three winning projects implemented by school youth DRR clubs will be awarded.
This initiative is part of the second phase of the “Supporting Disaster Risk Reduction amongst Vulnerable Communities and Institutions in South Caucasus” project funded by the Disaster Preparedness Program (DIPECHO) of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection aimed at building the resilience of children and vulnerable communities in hazard prone areas by promoting preparedness and disaster risk reduction education. The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, the Emergency Management Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the RDFG DRR Center.
