The world’s leading summit on the environment

The IUCN World Conservation Congress, held every four years, is where key stakeholders assemble to find solutions for a more sustainable future. Thousands of high-level decision makers from governments, NGOs, academia and business, as well as hundreds of media, come together to discuss the most crucial issues affecting our world today. This is a unique audience and a unique platform.

Nature-based solutions to global challenges

Over 10 days, participants will debate, share, network, learn, commit, vote and decide how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development.

Congress slogan: Nature +

Ecosystem services from nature are vastly undervalued by our governance systems and economic models. Nature+ captures the fundamental importance of nature and its inherent link to every aspect of our lives. We can build resilience and strengthen nature, and thus our own well-being, by scaling-up local conservation successes and by driving action on the ground.

A unique opportunity

The IUCN World Conservation Congress is the only global event that represents all aspects of conservation, bringing together government, civil society, academia and business, all at the same time and in the same place. The growing influence of environmental ministries and civil society’s role in tackling conservation issues at local, national and global levels means that the IUCN Congress is more important than ever.

The congress and disaster risk reduction

The Commission on Ecosystem Management, in partnership with the Ecosystem Management Programme, has laid out four 'journeys' as a road map to events associated with the commission/programme priorities for the coming four years. One of these journeys will be focused on disaster risk reduction. This journey, named 'The role ecosystems play in disaster risk reduction', documents the role ecosystem management plays in reducing the impact of natural and man-made disasters. Throughout the journey innovative and new partnerships are showcased as well as IUCN’s and members’ work on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

The congress and climate change

The journey 'Exploring ecosystem-based adaptation' explores ecosystem-based approaches to adapt to changing environmental conditions from the project level to policies. Participants will gain insights into guiding principles; discussions will identify lessons learned from communities in different ecosystems around the world including effective tools as well as the main challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Key points that will be considered include:

  • How Ecosystem-based Adaptation helps to reduce the effects of climate variability and climate change in different ecosystems and communities of the world.
  • How to determine the vulnerability of socio-ecological systems in different contexts and how Ecosystem-based Adaptation can promote greater resilience.
  • Ways in which Ecosystem-based Adaptation can be mainstreamed in Ecosystem Management.
