32nd International workshop on seismicity and earthquake engineering in the extended Mediterranean region (RELEMR)

Organizer(s) United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - Headquarters United States Geological Survey University of Malta
Venue
The State Hall, the Palace Hotel
Date
-

UNESCO and the USGS have been working with the Council of Europe, government agencies, and other organizations on a program for Reducing Earthquake Losses in the Extended Mediterranean Region (RELEMR). At these meetings, participants have discussed issues such as regional approaches to improve seismic data (e.g., more accurate locations and improved magnitude estimates), probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA), engineering issues (e.g., reasons for building failures), production of ground shaking and seismicity maps, the protection of historical sites in the Extended Mediterranean Region, and participated in training courses in PSHA, HAZUS-MH Earthquake Loss Estimation Model and other software.
These workshop contribute to the reduction of earthquake losses and participants have the opportunity to contribute to the health and safety of the millions of people in the extended Mediterranean region.

The Malta workshop will feature special sessions on Paleoseismicity in the Extended Mediterranean Region and on the measurement and interpretation of seismic site effects. Participants will be also be discussing a methodology for assessing school safety in the region. There will be general presentations in seismology, geology and earthquake engineering.
