International course: Towards mitigation of risks from natural disasters in the Caribbean Basin, knowledge and applying strategies

In 2009 the Government of the Republic of Colombia under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the Presidential Agency for Social Action and International Cooperation, (ACCION SOCIAL), and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), started the Colombian Cooperation Strategy with the Caribbean Basin, initiative that aims to make available to the countries of the region, some of the institutional strengths and capabilities developed by the country in five strategic areas:

1. Nutritional food security
2. Technical education
3. Bilingualism 4. Academic mobility
5. Disaster prevention and response

In this regard, and in order to continue the process of capacity building, exchange of experiences and knowledge, which started last year as part of the Caribbean Strategy, is made available with the support of the Organization of American States (OAS) through the Inter-American Network for Disaster Mitigation (INMD), the international course: Towards mitigation of risks from natural disasters in the Caribbean Basin, knowledge and applying strategies taught by the OSSO Corporation.

The course aims to train 20 professionals with the established profile.


Se abre convocatoria para el curso international: Hacia la mitigación de riesgos por fenómenos naturales en la Cuenca Caribe, cononcimientos y estrategias aplicables (in Spanish):

En el 2009 el Gobierno de la República de Colombia bajo la coordinación del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y con el apoyo de la Agencia Presidencial para la Acción Social y la Cooperación Internacional (ACCIÓN SOCIAL), y la Fundación Panamericana para el Desarrollo(FUPAD), inició la Estrategia de Cooperación de Colombia con la Cuenca del Caribe. El objetivo de esta iniciativa es poner a disposición de los países de la región algunas de las fortalezas institucionales y capacidades desarrolladas por el país en cinco áreas estratégicas:

1. Seguridad alimentaria
2. Formación técnico profesional
3. Bilingüismo
4. Movilidad académica
5. Prevención y atención de desastres y gestión del riesgo

En este sentido, y con el propósito de dar continuidad al proceso de fortalecimiento de capacidades, intercambio de experiencias y conocimientos, iniciado el año pasado en el marco de la Estrategia Caribe, se pone a disposición, con el apoyo de la Organización de los Estados Americanos –OEA a través de la Red Interamericana de Mitigación de Desastres –RIMD, el Curso internacional: Hacia la mitigación de riesgos por fenómenos naturales en la Cuenca Caribe, conocimientos y estrategias aplicables impartido por la Corporación OSSO de Colombia.

Target Audience

The course is aimed at professionals and officials from government institutions of the countries within the Caribbean Basin to comply with any of the following profiles:

- Officers whose responsibilities are related to decision-making and development planning in their respective countries and belonging to entities such as national planning offices, ministries of works, education, housing, environment, agriculture and / or property; and

- Heads of the entities responsible for disaster prevention and risk management
