About

Take part in this fireside chat on UNDRR's account on LinkedIn to learn from the WIN DRR Award winners about their career challenges and successes. Ms Shaila Shahid, an expert on climate change policy and adaptation finance, as well as Ms. Abia Akram, a disability rights advocate, will share their advice with women who are building a career in disaster risk reduction.

The Women's International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR) is a professional network to support women working in disaster risk reduction, in all their diversity. The overall goal of WIN DRR is to empower women to attain leadership and enhance their role in decision-making in disaster risk reduction in Asia-Pacific.

Speakers

Shaila Shahid based in Dhaka, Bangladesh is an Advisory Board member of ‘Tomorrow’s Cities’, the Urban Disaster Risk Hub of the UKRI and GCRF initiative, working globally to reduce disaster risk of the urban poor. Shaila Shahid is an environmental lawyer and is currently serving as the Senior Advisor of the Pitachara Forest and Biodiversity Initiatives and National Alliance on Drowning Prevention. Shaila was awarded the 2023 Excellence Award by the Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR).

Abia Akram from Islamabad in Pakistan has been a leading and vocal advocate for the rights of women with disabilities for more than 25 years. She has dedicated her life to empowering women with disabilities, especially in the context of gender justice, financing for development, climate change and inclusive disaster risk reduction. Abia was awarded the 2023 Rising Star Award by the Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR).

Moderator

Claire Doole uses her storytelling skills to lead a conversation that is clear and compelling for the audience. She immerses herself in the subject matter so that she can ask the pertinent questions, connect the dots and effectively bring out the insights of the speakers. Claire is passionate about European and world affairs - drawing on many years as a BBC correspondent in Berlin, Brussels, Geneva and London. During her career, Claire has interviewed some of the world’s leading statesmen including Nelson Mandela, Emmanuel Macron and Antonio Guterres.
