Remarks to General Assembly on the launch of preparations for the 2010 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Summit, New York, 4 March 2010
In her opening remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) stated that "the horrific loss of life in Haiti and the devastation in Chile are painful reminders that reducing disaster risk is vital for the achievement of the MDGs". Other speakers, including the President of the General Assembly (PGA) and the representative of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) also referenced 'natural' disasters and the adverse affects of climate change as obstacles to achieve the MDGs. Others called for a better policy coherence as a vital element to accelerate process towards MDGs.
