A declaration in which the scientific, technical and academic sector within the Americas provides recommendations on the role and value of science in informing the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (March 2015), sustainable development goals (September 2015) and climate change agreements through the UNFCCC (December 2015). It proposes four axes of action related to: (i) research; (ii) education and training; (iii) integration of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation; and (iv) communication and transfer of knowledge.
It also provides further observations related to certain gaps which should be considered in the new framework for 2015 and beyond, and the need to improve the contribution from the scientific community to policy-makers and society in general; and recommends to: champion and reinforce existing and future programs and initiatives for integrated research and the scientific assessment of disaster risk; and promote the establishment of an intergovernmental scientific mechanism for disaster risk reduction.
This statement was made at the Fourth Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas, held in Guayaquil, Ecuador on 27-29 May 2014.
