Afghanistan: Law on combating disasters in the Republic of Afghanistan

This law makes the Department of Emergency Preparedness responsible for organizing matters related to prevention of natural disasters. The department must prepare and implement measures to prevent natural disasters or reduce the impacts of their aftereffects. Specific disaster risk reductions provisions include: article 4(5) and article 5(12) which deal with the economics and finances of preventing natural disasters; article 4(7) which deals with educating inhabitants about the effects of disasters; article 5(6) which deals with early warning; and article 6(2) which deals with risk and identification assessment.

Note: this law refers to the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. The referred to country name and political party are no longer official. The law was enacted in 1991 when the country was referred to as either the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan or the Republic of Afghanistan, which it was called until 1992. The country is now officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Despite multiple governments ruling the country after the law's enactment, it still remains relevant.
