Editorial Objective

PreventionWeb aims to foster an exchange of information among those working in or interested in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). To achieve this aim, we rely on information partnerships with the DRR community.

Contribute, Connect & Collaborate in the DRR Community

We invite PreventionWeb community members­our users­to contribute content and promote the development of communities of practice:

DRR Content Collection:
Contribute and find documents and publications, policy and reports, news and announcements, meetings and conferences, academic programmes, training materials, jobs, multimedia and online resources related to disaster risk reduction

DRR Communities of Practice:
Join, promote or build networks by theme, issue or location

Research, Identify & Investigate Trends in Disaster Risk Reduction

We aim to maintain a comprehensive user-driven database by collecting and linking to:
  • DRR Initiatives: search national and international projects
  • DRR Contact Database: find and connect with others working at the Country, Regional and Global level
  • DRR Reference Documents: save and download documents to your profile
  • DRR terminology: find ISDR terminology and submit translations
  • DRR search: all sites related to disaster risk reduction
  • DRR calendar: meetings, conferences, training and academic programmes
  • DRR fact sheets: by theme, issue and hazard
  • DRR country profiles: including data and statistics, National Platform and Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) focal points

Editorial Policy

Content Collection

Partners are invited to submit content on the subject of disaster risk reduction.

PreventionWeb is a public website publishing abstracts, or full text with permission, linking to source web site(s) and/or full text, and downloadable documents with permission.

Content Types

PreventionWeb accepts the following content types for review:

  • Documents and publications: publications, articles, reports, papers, case studies and presentations DRR theme, issue or hazard
  • Policy and reports: national policy and reporting on the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action, DRR-related development reports
  • News and announcements: activities and initiatives of partners in DRR
  • Training and events: meetings, conferences, training and non-training academic programmes
  • Academic programmes in disaster risk reduction
  • Education and training materials
  • Job listings related to DRR
  • Multimedia and online resources
  • Maps depicting relevant hazard, exposure and vulnerability

We do not accept any material containing: advertising, mission statements, or items that do not provide substantive researched information or project-based studies of practice.

Content Review

PreventionWeb editors review each submission individually in order to consider it for inclusion. Each item is reviewed by a minimum of two editors. If an item submitted to that does not comply with our selection criteria, we will contact the person submitting to request more information or suggest revisions if appropriate.

Content Selection

PreventionWeb Editors' responsibility includes:

  • Searching for new DRR content
  • Developing sources by liaising with organizational contacts
  • Reviewing submissions
  • Selecting timely and DRR-relevant material for online publishing
  • Classifying information for easy retrieval and searching
  • Encouraging submission of content from information partners
  • Maintaining high editorial standards to meet the needs of its users

Content Standards

Content published on PreventionWeb is judged to be reliable, valid, timely and objective. We do not publish content that promotes political, personal or religious agendas, or that is libelous or slanderous.

In the event we are alerted to any content which breaks these terms, or is suspected to be otherwise inappropriate, objectionable or fraudulent, we reserve the right to remove or edit it at any time and without prior notice.

The opinions expressed in content published on PreventionWeb, or on sites linked to from PreventionWeb, inclusive of editorial articles, are those of the authors and are not necessarily shared by the ISDR Secretariat or PreventionWeb editors.

Content Sources

PreventionWeb is guided by the needs of our audience and the DRR community.

  • Identifying sources:
  • First, among organizations and practitioners recognized by the DRR community as working in the area of DRR
  • Second, among news and information service providers covering hazards, themes and issues that are deemed relevant by the DRR community
  • Evaluating and validating sources in consultation with organizations and practitioners working in DRR
  • Developing sources of new content within the DRR community by assisting in the identification of information gaps between content searched and content available

Information Exchange Agreements

Collaboration and Partnership:
PreventionWeb aims to create agreements/establish partnerships with a variety of actors working in the area of DRR. We aim to deliver transparent, neutral and diverse content to PreventionWeb's audience: those working in or interested in the area of DRR.

Permission to Republish:
When a source has been identified that fulfils the criteria of authority and reliability, timeliness and objectivity, PreventionWeb contacts the source and asks for formal permission to republish its information on PreventionWeb. All contributions are deemed permission.
