Tsunami and you - Living more safely with natural hazards

Source(s):  Geoscience Australia (GA)

Geoscience Australia, in partnership with AusAID took part in the three-year natural hazard risk reduction project, Strengthening Natural Hazard Risk Assessment Capacity in Papua New Guinea from 2010-2013. As part of this project, educational materials designed to inform the people of East New Britain of the hazard posed from tsunami, earthquake & volcanic eruption were created. These education materials detailed how residents can alter their actions to make them more resilient to the effects of these hazards.

This animation accompanies a trio of booklets and posters. This animation follows the experiences of three East New Britain locals during and directly after an earthquake and tsunami event. When the earthquake occurs Felix is far out at sea in a boat, transporting people between islands, Sammy is fishing at the beach and Isa is at the markets, selling goods from her garden. All three people use their knowledge of earthquake and tsunami hazard to keep the members of their community safe.

Remember the warning signs of a tsunami:

  • Shake: Strong earthquake shaking
  • Drop: The sea may go out quickly
  • Roar: A roaring noise will be heard when the tsunami is near
