Master of Disaster Risk Management

The Master of Disaster Risk Management (MDRM) Programme concept lies in the balance and links among “Education/Training - Research - Practice”. While knowledge is acquired through “Education/Training,” “Research” allows to make the analysis and “Practice” provides the skills for us to make evidence-based decisions and actions. In this context, the MDRM Programme attempts to develop DRM professionals who will be equipped with these set of skills.

This one-year master program is an initiative by the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur and the Japanese Government. It teaches both fundamental principles and technical skills and a series of on-field exercises (including 2-week attachment in Japan) in 2-week modules designed and managed by Malaysian and Japanese experts.

The program is supported by the Japanese University Consortium (JUC), consisting of members including Tsukuba University, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, Yamaguchi University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). There are also opportunities to collaborate with university and research institutions across other ASEAN countries through the ASEAN University Network (AUN) administered under the JICA project, AUN/SEED-Net (
