5th International Summer School on Disaster Management


This summer school is a good opportunity for the participants to understand the disaster management system and how this system works at regional, national, European and international level. It is important that students in risk management related fields to have Disaster Management elements in their education. The wider concept, the global, regional and national concept is essential when talking about disaster management.

The summer school involves outdoor activities (2 nights in tents) and you are kindly asked to have proper equipment (boots, warm clothes, raincoats, sleeping bags). The dormitories are 4 beds each (shared bathroom).

The summer school is assigned 4 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). The language of the summer school is English.


  • Disaster risk management - Theory & Concepts

  • Disaster environment

  • Disaster Management Cycle

  • The national and international DM system

  • Disaster response planning

  • Needs assessment for disaster response

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for disaster management

  • Information management, information and decision flow in disaster management

  • Technical and logistical aspects in disaster response

  • First aid

  • Disaster risk communication

  • Exercise design and preparation

  • Exercise in field (continuously for 48 hours)

Target audience

Students in Environmental Sciences and Environmental Engineering, Geography, Biology, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Risk Communication, Sociology, International Relations, International Affairs, Administration and Public Relations (at all levels of their education: Bachelor, Master, PhD).

Practitioners in the field, representatives of emergency situations authorities, representatives of NGOs in the field of humanitarian aid and emergency response, representatives of Red Cross Societies, safety and security officers in companies.

  • Research-Development Institute for Environmental Protection Technologies and Equipment (ICPE) Bistrita, Romania

  • Trainers: Invited lecturers from the international civil protection system and academics.

In order to apply for the Summer School, you must provide the following:

  • Letter of motivation
  • CV in English

Evaluation period: 1-7 May 2020

Results: 8 May 2020

Payment by:15 May 2020

Tuition & cost

The participation fee is 400 EUR. For representatives of the partner institutions the fee is 150 EUR (or 700 lei). The participation fee includes summer school materials, accommodation and meals. Transportation costs will be covered by the participants. The online payment link will be uploaded soon.
